2008-09 CHORUS AUDITION INFORMATION SHEET
Vocal Jazz Ensemble
(open to all students)
This is a new Westfield vocal ensemble
Eligibility: Any student in a Westfield Chorus or Instrumental Ensemble
This is a One-Credit Class that Meets 8th period throughout the
school year:
Tuesdays from 6-8 p.m. and Thursdays until late buses.
3-4 concerts scheduled for 2008-09 in addition to some community performances
Instructor: Ms. Lardin, co-directed by local prominent vocal jazz artist Jim Van Slyke
Why you should join:
- Learn vocal jazz techniques, both ensemble and solo
- Learn vocal improvisation
- Improve your musicianship and sight-reading
- Discover how to swing it using your voice
- Develop an understanding of vocal jazz style and performance
- Expand your repertoire
- Sing with other strong musicians
- Experience vocal jazz performance with live instrumental
accompaniment (local professionals
and/or our own Westfield student instrumentalists)
AUDITION INFORMATION
Vocal Jazz Audition Workshop- After school on May 27 from 2:30-4 p.m.
It is not mandatory that you attend the workshop, but it is strongly
recommended.
You will learn audition music and, most importantly, how to sing in the
correct style for your audition.
Private Audition with Ms. Lardin and Mr. Van Slyke- After school on May 28
beginning at 2:30.
5 minutes time slots available—sign up on the white board outside the chorus
room.
HOW TO ACCESS AUDITION MATERIALS:
- Get the sheet music song packet from Ms. Lardin
- Choose one of four vocal solos- “Taking A Chance On Love,” “Satin Doll,” “Beginning to See the Light,” or “Juke Box Saturday Night.”
- Use the Online Vocal Tracks to learn the music and practice. Both solo
vocal line for
learning purposes and full accompaniment for practice are available for download.
